Tutu, my parakeet I’ve written about previously, is a wonderful, friendly bird, but like most parakeets, she is easily spooked. When we first brought her home we did not have a bird cage cover. We assumed that when we turned the lights out for the night she would settle down and go to sleep. That was not the case. Every little noise and blinking light bothered her.
We consulted with a friend who has kept parakeets for many years and he told us we absolutely needed to find a birdcage cover. The very next day we browsed through bird cage covers and found one that keeps Tutu’s cage dark at night. We also moved her cage to a quieter room in the rear of the house. Now when the lights go off and the cover goes on Tutu is able to sleep quite comfortably.
Tutu, our parakeet, is a playful, inquisitive creature. To keep her occupied during the day when we’re not home we’ve accessorized her birdcage. The first bird cage accessories we installed were perches. Each perch is constructed of different materials and has different diameter to give Tutu some variety.
Next, we installed several toys. Her favorites seem to be the knotted rope toys, wooden toys, swing and bells. Finally, we hung a medium size mirror on one wall of her cage. When she gets bored of her toys she amuses herself by staring and talking to her reflection for hours.
